Befriending, A Cure For Loneliness

31 Aug 2017

It’s estimated that more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live on their own. Living alone is not a problem as long as you have an active social life. However, more than a million elderly go for over a month without speaking to a family member or friend, and that this level of isolation can harm your mental health and may lead to depression.

You can tackle isolation by joining a befriending organisation. These groups can put you in contact with a younger person who will visit you in your home and provide friendly conversation and companionship.

People who volunteer at befriending organisations, are usually good listeners and reliable. They are usually provided with training before becoming a befriender and most projects are under regular supervision, which guarantees the quality and safety of the service.

There are several groups and organisations that provide befriending services in Lewisham. For example, Voluntary Services Lewisham matches volunteers with users based on shared interests and individual’s needs (http://vslonline.org.uk/befriending/). Age UK offers a befriending service too (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/lewishamandsouthwark/how-you-can-help/volunteering/). Just get in touch with them and give befriending a try!
