Ladies, brush up on your ideas, or you might have to wait another four years…

27 Feb 2024

Dear LPG readers,

I am addressing my comments to you ladies today in case someone still needs to get around to popping the question.

I hope LPG can post this message while giving a bit of notice that we are coming up to the one day every four years when it is not thought forward for us ladies to get on our knees and do a bit of serious question-popping.

I am not suggesting that you go out there and find the first man you meet before seeing if your knee can still take your weight, but the Office of National Statistics says that in 2021, there were over 11 million couples over the age of 65 living together.  I am female and still living over the brush in retirement. It might be worth considering making it official because if there are stepchildren (as old as they might be), a bereaved partner might find his or herself out in the cold when they most could do with a bit of security and, while there can be a lot of reasons to stay just as you are, there are a lot of other advantages to tying an official knot.

I have found a few online articles that could give an insight into why getting him to say yes might be a good idea for both of you, and I hope that LPG will share them while giving you a few days’ notice so that you can have a bit of a read about what that missing ring might mean as you get older.

Men get older, but some will always be complacent when it comes to officially plighting a bit of troth. It might be a bit of a dirty job but having looked at the advantages of the possible pros, you might agree that it’s worth considering.

While I am advocating making things more legally binding for the many practical reasons that might materialise, please don’t think that I do not have a romantic bone in my body.  Even if you don’t live together, there must be lots of ladies who have been thinking about giving their relationships a bit of a nudge.

A couple of final thoughts…   If the answer is ‘yes’, remember that he is still supposed to provide the engagement ring (don’t let him get away with that one). For all the other romantic and practical advantages that there may be, there is nothing wrong with having an excuse to start planning a whole new outfit!
