Versed thoughts (chapter 67): Winter Warmth

01 Feb 2024

Dear LPG,

Isn’t it funny how much colder the winters seem when you get older?  There was more snow and less central heating when I was younger, but I never felt the cold as I do now.

Perhaps we older people are more used to being able to take a look outside and postpone a trip that we had planned to make just because, as we get older, our trips out don’t depend on time limits quite as much.

But a beautiful winter’s day, seen through the window of a nice warm sitting room, can look idyllic to some, while the scene brings shivers to others, even if they are looking with their hands wrapped around a nice, hot cup of tea.

 I was doing just that when I was inspired to write this poem…

WINTER WARMTH

It’s been wet and windy and cold today,
So here in my house, I’d rather stay.
Nothing could drag me outdoors in the cold;
The reason is this: I am ever so old.

This type of weather could do me much harm,
But if I eat well, keep cosy and warm;
This should prevent me from falling ill:
I just hope I’ll be able to afford the bill.

It is wet and windy, frosty and grey,
But thank the Lord for another winter’s day,
For family and friends and every blessing;
I mustn’t grumble; I’m in need of nothing.

And though it is cold and freezing out there;
Their warmth and their kindness fill my heart with good cheer.
So I need not worry what the winter will bring,
A few more months then it will be spring.
