Making breakfast worth getting up for…

30 Nov 2023

Dear LPG

I live alone but I am happy to say I don’t feel that lonely. I still make a point of getting out at least six days a week, and I have many friends, some of whom have found themselves in the same position since they got around to retiring.

I am not opposed to living in a space where, if I lose something, I only have myself to blame, but it has not taken me very long to become a bit lazy about what I have for breakfast these days. In fact, I have to admit that I have become a bit lazy about eating correctly in general.

It is so much easier to put something between two slices of bread. Presentation is not such a worry because as long as you know that the ingredients are wholesome and where they came from, you can happily eat anything. Another advantage is that you can please yourself when it comes to eating on the go because there is no one around to remind you not to put your elbows on the table or bother with cutlery let alone hold it properly.

The downside is that not having anyone to share it with can make you lazy, too. They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I also believe in that other adage: variety is the spice of life, but it is so easy not to bother with all that. If I am in a hurry to get out early, spending all that time preparing something that will disappear minutes later and cause another lot of washing up can seem pretty non-productive.

I do not doubt that you have had others write on this subject. Still, I have this theory that if you have something interesting to eat first thing in the morning to look forward to once you open your eyes and remember what day it is and what you have to do, your stomach will give the rest of you a kick start when it comes down to throwing back the bedcovers.

On that note, I have found some breakfasts that are arguably quick to make in the mornings. If you know how I suggest that making a breakfast date with someone you can video call will give you an added reason to get up on time and make sure that your breakfast and the way that you eat it conforms to some of the standards that your mum taught you all those years ago.
