Versed thoughts (chapter 65): My Name Is Dog

22 Feb 2024

Dear LPG reader,

Have you got a dog?  I learned from the internet that there are more Dog owners than people with cats as pets.  I have no doubt that many LPG readers can remember that day, when, as a child, you were introduced to your first canine pet.

I know that my siblings and I spent quite some time before agreeing on what to call her, but I wonder what she was thinking while we were going through the catalogues of possible appellations.  With hindsight what words would she have chosen to introduce herself were she able to speak…

This was the thought that prompted me to put rhyming pen to paper on this occasion…

My Name Is Dog

“My name is dog, that’s who I am,
It matters not where I came from.
I know you’ve got a name picked out,
Some fancy name I have no doubt.”

“My name is dog, remember that;
I’m not a parrot or a pussy cat.
I do not need these fancy names,
Only my food, some fun and games!”

“My name is dog, that’s all, just dog;
I love and I’m so proud to be a dog.
And though I am a gorgeous female pet,
Please do not call me Paulette!”

“I am a dog; I am not like you!
Don’t call me Tracy, Mitsy or Mo!
Don’t call me Lilly and don’t call me Nell,
Just call me dog and all will be well!”

“I am a dog and I know my fate,
Do not call me Pixie or Queenie or Kate!
I am a dog with four legs, not two,
I am a dog; I’m not like you!”
