Extinction, how can we really help?

20 Jun 2023

Dear LPG,

My son told me that his young family had been to Chessington world of Adventure and I asked if they visited the zoo.  He told me that they never had time for all that because of the long queues you have to be on to get to the rides.  I am so old that I remember when the main attraction was the zoo.

What he said got me thinking and not so long after, I was looking around the internet when I came across a video which listed its version of the ten most endangered species in the world.

I have to say that when I have thought of such things over the years or if you had asked me what I thought was the most threatened, I would have mentioned the giant panda.  Most of my generation can remember when the birth of one of these cuddly looking animals would have made the television news if nothing else but there is so much going on in this world of ours that so much slips our minds. We can only manage to pay attention to so many things at one time and our capacity to do that starts to deteriorate way before we retire.

It did not take me long to find lists of a lot of other animals, some that I haven’t even heard of, which are also included on the various lists of animals whose populations are getting dangerously small and while we all assume that they are in other parts of the world there are a few that are slowly disappearing from our English soil.

The video I found really got me thinking about what we can do to help.  We are used to seeing the adverts asking for money and while giving a bit of that every now and then can ease our consciences a bit I got to wondering if there is anything else we can do.

I found a few answers and, even though you sort of think that everyone would have to join in to make a real difference, each person that learns a little bit, and does a little bit, has to be positive so I would like to pass on what the internet taught me in the hope that just a few more people make the time to do what it takes to help to make a difference to the world around us…
