The Benefits Of Reading

08 Sep 2017

Think of the last time you read a book. Maybe you're a regular reader so it hasn't been too long since you last finished one (perhaps you're currently reading a book!). However, if you haven't read a book for a very long time (and maybe it's been so long that you can't even remember) you should know why it would be a good idea to get into the habit of reading.

What are the benefits of reading for older people? It's been proven that stress can go away when you find yourself in the middle of a good story. Reading a book that you enjoy provides mental stimulation, which has been shown to slow or possibly prevent Alzheimer and Dementia, two of the most common health issues among the elderly. Reading also improves your memory, as it forges new brain pathways and strengthens existing ones.

As for the access to books, books are now much more accessible than they used to be, you are probably more familiar with printed books, but nowadays there are other options available. Of course there are libraries where you can borrow not only books but also CDs and DVDs. You can still buy books from shops, but another possibility is to order them online and get them shipped. And one last option is buying digital versions of books to read them on your computer, your phone or your electronic book.

But would you like to borrow books from the library but you cannot get into it? If that's the case, Lewisham Council offers a home library service, which delivers books, CDs, and DVDs, and an e-Library service, which allows you to borrow electronic books.

So there are no excuses. It's never too late to take up a new hobby. Try to read a book every day for at least 10 minutes, and you will soon reap the benefits.
