Snacks, meals, health and convenience…

22 Apr 2023

Dear LPG

It is vital for us all to eat, and for the most part, it is something I like doing, but when it comes to getting something tempting together, the thought of interrupting what one is doing to prepare a meal can seem like too much trouble.

Without being sexist about it, when you are a man who lives alone, I think this especially applies, and for years one of my solutions has been the Sandwich.

Putting something interesting on a bit of bread when you get peckish must have been with humankind for ages. However, his invention some 260 years ago will always remind us of how the 4th Earl of Sandwich changed the whole concept by adding that second layer of bread which allows that unique air of convenience that saves the filling from getting mixed up with whatever else your fingers are trying to deal with while you are getting it consumed. Perhaps he was the original inventor of multitasking.

I know that we can overeat bread, and I tried asking the internet about it to find out how much is too much without a lot of success. There is a lot of information, but very little of it is specific on the subject of quantity. I have learned that the average person in the UK eats about eight slices a day (I don’t get through quite that much, though, so I have come to the happy conclusion that I must be below average in some ways that count). I also found a site about the weight per slice, but I have to admit that a lot of what was said there went right over my head…

The other consideration though has to be the kind of bread we eat which is also quite crucial according to the internet. It is no secret that wholemeal brown bread is better than the white stuff, but I suppose I like tasteless bread for my sandwiches. After all, it is there mainly to make the middle layer more convenient to eat, and the middle taste is what we aim to experience.

I suspect that there are quite a few sandwich eaters who also read the LPG website, and while I have been researching the best bread to eat, if you, like me, just can’t live without it, I have found some suggestions which I feel might be worth passing on.
