Going off on a tangent: - a lateral insurance thought…

05 Apr 2023

Dear LPG,

Isn’t it funny how, when you are caught up trying to work on something you really have no interest in, your mind seems to try its best to escape by moving onto one of those really odd thoughts that stays with the subject but moves on to an aspect of it that is totally irrelevant but just a bit more interesting.

It was time to renew my house contents and buildings insurance when this happened to me and, trying my best to find a less expensive price than the one my current insurer was offering, was   taxing to say the least.  I think most will agree when I say that that is pretty boring, and the worry of not getting it right usually forces your brain to have a lateral thought or two.

Mine got thinking about insurance in general and came up with a random thought.

I came to the conclusion that Insurance is much like betting.  The insurers are betting that the worst won’t happen, and so are you, but just in case you are shelling out loads of money.

That thought got me wondering about the most unusual insurance bets that have ever been made and when you are alone with a computer you just have to ask Google.

That is what I did, and having done so I would like to share my findings.  I found some really unexpected answers and although most of them are quite bizarre it is interesting that many of the oddest things ever insured were done to protect the reputation of relatively famous or rich people. Hair, body parts and personal talents featured quite a lot.   When you think about it, you would have to be fairly rich to need to insure that sort of thing, and I am betting that the premiums weren’t cheap!

FL shares some of the really unusual things ever insured (while LPG reminds that most of these articles are written by organisations trying to sell you something, and suggests that enjoying the information included but avoiding the adverts, is a good idea unless you seriously need insurance…)
