Worry about the beginning and let the end take care of itself…

12 Feb 2023

Dear LPG,

I read in your pages, what RK had to say about making sure that everyone remembers that you were here, once you have gone, and that got me thinking (►►►).

There seems to be a recurring theme when it comes to advice about the most important things that are needed for a successful retirement.  If you go to the internet and Google the subject, the information that comes up seems to predominantly refer to how much money you need to have in order to enjoy those latter years of your life, or what fun things you should do as a distraction.

But surely, while all aspire to enjoy retirement, it should not all be about amusing yourself while you wait for the inevitable.  For those who have already jumped the retirement barrier, it is important to enjoy our present life as much as we can regardless of what our present income happens to be. I suppose that getting the most out of retirement does tend to mean that each life needs to include the things that amuse, but there is also a lot of satisfaction to be derived from acknowledging the things that remind us that there was, and still is, a point to the lives we are living.

I agree with RK who suggested that starting on a few chapters of your autobiography might be a way to go if writing is your thing, but it then struck me you might not have time to finish it and that may well put many people off.

If you find yourself worrying about what will happen if you don’t complete your project, there is no need to worry, you will be in good company.  I took a look at just how many people have left unfinished works behind them.  I suppose that the famous ones are the most remembered, but the future list has no chance of including yours if you don’t get started…
