Releasing your inner poet…

06 Oct 2022

Dear LPG,

When you are feeling really down about life in general there is nothing like a good story, film, book or poem to make you feel better.  So many of us, whatever our age, derive a lot of pleasure from reading, or watching or listening to the same ones over and over again, but I got thinking the other day that it might be nice to leave a little something for others to enjoy, even if only younger generations of my family discover such writings years from now.

But where do you start?   I decided that the easiest one of these four entertainments to start with would be a poem.  After all, you only need an idea and four rhyming lines.  But having made up my mind to have a go, choosing an idea can be a challenge.  So I got myself a cup of tea and took a look at what the internet has to say about where to start when harnessing your inner poet.

I found some advice for the completely ignorant beginner and also a wonderful website designed to help when you’re stuck for a rhyme and, after a bit of internet instruction, I came up with the following…

My first Poem

Poems are such clever things
And reading them, I find
Can sometimes give your spirit wings
And help improve the mind

On those days when you’re feeling down
With not a lot to do
A poem can turn your day around
And change your point of view

If reading one can do all that
I thought I’d have a go
At writing something of my own
from my pen, this did flow…

…and the best thing is that, having produced my first 12 lines, as basic as they are, LPG have told me that they would be happy to print them for me.   So my poem is likely to be read by a few internet readers.  I wonder if that makes me a poet?

LW, Catford,

LW offers a few pointers on the day and getting started with your own poem…
