Getting right down to your legs…

18 Feb 2022

Dear LPG,

I have noticed that, as this last winter reminds us just how cold the UK can be, I have experienced days when my legs seem to be permanently cramped.  You expect it to happen sometimes but for me this year, it is really becoming a part of my daily health experience even though the winter has not been as harsh in comparison to winters we became used to at the end of the last century.

There are quite a few reasons why older people get this sort of pain and, when I mentioned this during a telephone consultation recently, my doctor suggested that the circulation in my legs may have something to do with it, and recommended more walking as the first remedy to try.

Lock down is nearly over now, or so the government would have us believe, but while at home one day recently, I looked on-line to find out what is thought to be the best way to get nearer to the point where you can stop it happening.

I am getting out and about more and, although it is not always severe, I am still aware of what is going on down there.  I thought I would look on-line to see if there is any advice offered.

Apart from exercise, there are a variety of foot vibrating machines which are supposed to help.   I have also tried one that combines that with an electronic footbath, and it has helped, but I was surprised to hear that another possible way to deal with the problem is to wear compression stockings even if you are not planning a flight to far off lands anytime soon.

One thing that I have learnt is that problems with circulation in the lower part of the body is a relatively common problem as we get older, and I found a few tips that might help any other sufferers out there.

I have yet to find out if they make a difference to me…
