Versed thoughts (chapter 43): SAVING THE WORLD

21 Mar 2022

Dear LPG,

I remember a brilliant TV programme where Judy Dench showed us her garden and told us about the support the trees gave to each other through their roots. Talking on the radio last week a scientist said all the burnt forests could renew themselves naturally through the roots and tree planting was only necessary where none had grown before.

This was my inspiration for the short poem that I have penned…

SAVING THE WORLD

Move in thought now to any wood,
You will find miracles, if you could
dig down to discover the roots
all interconnected, shoots on shoots.

Supporting, nourishing one and another-
nature’s lesson for those who bother
to discover the wondrous substructure
deep below the visible tree culture.

Living, fertile, not trapped in isolation;
trees fulfilling their carbon saving vocation.

Foster Murphy

LPG found a link to the programme that motivated Foster’s poem, and also some information about Tree Charter Day which heralds National Tree Week in the UK each year…
