Do you get ‘September Syndrome’?

17 Sep 2021

Dear LPG,

Each year, the end of August has always heralded a time when the fun of summer is over and Autumn kicks in.  Ever since starting school a very long time ago for me, the summer came to an official end on the first Monday in September when we all went back to school and, for some reason on that first morning back, the early morning sun that the previous few weeks’ mornings brought with them suddenly turned into ones where you appreciated your blazer because of that morning chill in the air that September brought with it.

Now that I am a lot older, September still draws a line under summer for me because I find that my joints seem to warn me that things are going to get worse in the pain department, and it is as if they know when that nip in the air is back for the next six or so months.

I used to think this was just my problem, but during a chat with one of my friends recently, we found that our joints seemed to agree on this point, and I don’t think it is just the two of us who suffer.

We know that this happens every year, but it never hurts to see if there are any new ideas around that might make this year a little easier on those joints of ours, so we went to the internet and found some tips and ideas that were a revelation although most of it was what we expected.  The interesting thing is that, while joint pain affects us all differently, September acts like a joint pain advance alarm warning system.

Now that we are getting over lockdown and back to normal, I put this to a few more friends and they agreed which left me thinking that we cannot be the only ones who experience what we now call ‘September syndrome’.

Most of what we found is pretty run of the mill stuff although the interesting thing was that there were a few bits and tips that she had never heard of before, and I found a few new things to try too, but a lot of what she knew, I was learning for the first time and vice versa.

So, just in case there are a few new nuggets of information that any LPG readers can use, we thought we would share them…

LPG takes the opportunity of the ever present warning about trying new exercises without the advice of the Doctor.

EB offers what she found in the hope that a few LPG readers might just learn something they never knew before…
