Eyes, a timely reminder or two…

19 Sep 2020

Dear LPG readers,

I was taking a look at the internet the other day and discovered a few unusual facts about eyes.  One being that, predictably, they have a national awareness week dedicated to them, so I have written a few lines in their honour and asked LPG to be kind enough to mark the day that starts the week in question.

Did you know that we see everything upside-down and it is our brains that turn what we see the right way up, it is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open or that your eyebrows are designed to prevent sweat from falling into your eyes? These are just a few of the really unusual facts that I learned with a 10-minute internet clicking session.

From what I read, I have worked out that about 3% of Brits have some degree of sight loss and I have noticed that so many of the rest of us tend to take our sight for granted.  One of the ways that we do this is by not getting them checked often enough even though eye tests don’t cost us oldies anything if we are over the age of 60.  I have also learned that there are quite a few completely unrelated illnesses that can come to light during an eye test which your optician can warn you about even if you have always had perfect vision.  So, I thought that this would be the optimum opportunity to share the information and offer a timely reminder about getting yours checked.

I know that the recent pandemic has been the cause of so many shops and services remaining closed and opticians have been no exception, but the fact that this is National Eye Health Week might be a good time to jog the memory about the importance of having a test if you have not for a while.
