Down in the mouth in more ways than one…

10 Apr 2020

Dear LPG,

I came across these videos while taking a look around the internet and, as a sufferer myself, I thought that other readers might benefit from knowing a little about what we can do to make a mouth ulcer a little easier to live with.  It is true that when they appear they give little warning and, you can carry on in spite of some of them while others can stop you from doing anything with your day because of the pain.

I suffer quite badly from time to time and have done ever since I started wearing dentures. If the first pair you tried fitted perfectly you are so lucky, and I have found out that it is the fact that there often is one particular spot where they are in contact with the wall of my mouth that keeps the pain returning.  That is my problem but apparently there are all sorts of causes and worrying about one can be very stressful.  It is usually something that is really upsetting to the sufferer because, while no one else can see a problem, it can often be the stress of having it which is making it worse; stress affects them too.

I found some videos which offer some sound advice, a lot of which, if you have ever had one of these mouth sores, you might well know, but there will be other tips that may make all the difference the next time you have one crop up. I am definitely going to try the potato…

Perhaps there are a few new things you can do apart from trying to find an emergency dentist if you find yourself with serious oral discomfort late on a Sunday evening and it is preventing you from sleeping, eating, talking and much more, and the alternative is a trip to see an emergency practitioner or a three-hour wait at A&E.
