Keeping the neighbours guessing…

11 Apr 2020

Dear LPG,

It is often said that the best thing about going on holiday is getting home again and I agree that whatever sort of break you take often reminds you to appreciate your usual routine more.

All the preparation is key and, while packing and making sure that your travel documents are in order is important, I just know that I cannot be the only one who spends lots of time preparing my home for its holiday from its occupants, especially if they are all leaving for a short while.  We naturally want to make sure that those who know we are not there are on the lookout for us and those who do not need to know, don’t.

By that time, you have hopefully made sure that the papers and milk are cancelled and your head is caught up with the holiday, not what you are temporarily leaving behind.

Those thoughts often start to kick in once the taxi has arrived and you are on your way but, a couple of days before I left for my last holiday, I happened to find a few lists of extra precautions that perhaps will give a little additional security and peace of mind.

Some of them are pretty obvious (like cancelling newspapers and milk) and others are things that would need to be done with much more notice; such as having those cameras and doorbells that will allow you to see what is happening while you are away, regardless of where in the world you are bound.  I don’t have a mobile phone or any idea about such things but I am lucky enough to have a son who does, and who has set it all up for me so that he can keep an eye on his mobile phone while I am not there.

So I suggest that, even if you came home and all was well this time, it is worth thinking about all this for next year’s vacation.
