I heard about it and then I heard it!

17 Oct 2019

Dear LPG,

Today, I would like to write about something that I have heard of but which, just for a while recently, turned into something that I heard all of the time.

I have a friend who has often talked about the funny little sound which she can always hear.  Every now and then she mentions it but it does not seem to affect her life that much these days.  I have recently had just a taste of what she has tried to describe to me after a really loud concert that I attended which left me with ringing ears for a week or so afterwards.  For a very short while I understood what it was like to always hear a little hiss as well as what you are used to, because I became a sufferer of the condition called Tinnitus.

Mine has come and gone now, at least I don’t think I can hear anything out of the ordinary anymore, and I have learnt some really interesting facts about how you can get it and what you can do about it if it becomes a real problem for you.

Did you know that about one person in ten is affected at some time during their lives, that It is all about sounds that your brain generates rather than the sounds that you can actually hear? It can sometimes indicate that you have a serious hearing problem although some people can live with it while for others it can overpower every aspect of their lives.  While there is no cure for it there are things that can be done to make it a more bearable condition to live with, and the British Tinnitus Association hold frequent events and offer education for those who suffer.

While I was learning about the condition, and since it affects so many, I found some interesting information which I would like LPG to share with its readers.

We have also found some videos on the subject which may help if you are not sure exactly what Tinnitus sounds like…
