Get the conservatory conserving…

18 Jan 2019

Dear LPG,

There is no doubt about it, the really intense heat of the summer of 2018 was punishing, but all the sweating and dehydration it caused is now a vague memory as we, in Lewisham, prepare for the short, dark days and traitorous nights yet to come towards the end of this year.

Winter always takes an extra, especially hard, toll on the pockets of the elderly because our bodies truly crave the heat to function adequately.    I have no doubt that the rest of society are secretly jealous of the little bit of extra money that the government affords us elders to help us ensure that hypothermia does not set in, but for all that, how can we best make sure that we make the most of the heating in our homes over the winter?

There are lots of suggestions on line; I read recently that we could make a little more use of the sun if we have a conservatory.    Can you remember the way that when you take a walk in the early autumn, it does not seem so cold in the sun, while walking in the shade makes you feel it is time to put your jacket or cardigan back on, especially if there is a bit of a wind?  If your home has a conservatory it is a good idea to remember that they trap all the warmth from the sun while shielding you from the wind, so leaving the door between a conservatory and the main part of your house open during the sunniest part of a bright winter’s day, will allow all that trapped warmth to be let lose in the adjoining room.

I found some interesting online quizzes on the subject and learned quite a bit, from answering the questions about other things I could do to conserve heat in my particular home.  As they always say, when you are getting a quotation for any work to be done, it is a good idea to have three independent estimates.  This is a general rule which can be applied to many things that we try so I have left LPG three little quizzes on the subject for you to try and hope you will be as surprised, as I was, to learn a little more about how I can conserve the natural heat in my home.
