A seriously disrespectful action.

12 Nov 2018

Dear LPG

One day, not so long ago, I was driving along and I got to a zebra crossing on a main road in our borough.  I was about third in a queue on one of those new styled crossings where the pedestrians get a count down before the lights change to allow the traffic to pass through.  There was an elderly lady crossing the road.  She was walking with a stick and it was obviously a really hard job for her.  It took her a lot longer than the count down time to make the journey even though she started it when the lights first changed, and I remember thinking that in spite of all the serious effort it obviously took, she was out there doing her thing regardless of how much harder it was for her to achieve this than for most older people who would have made the journey in the first place.

She finally got past the middle island and the traffic on the other carriageway was able to move but to my amazement, a motor bike which was approaching sped past the line of cars that mine was a part of near the kerb and carried on, roaring past the lady as she finished her walk to the other side of the road.  The noise of the bike alarmed me momentarily even though I was in a car so I was left wondering what affect the sound and sudden passing of that vehicle would have had on the lady crossing the road.

I know that the lights were green and the countdown had passed but I was so disappointed at the blatant lack of respect shown for the lady on the crossing.

I believe that our actions say a lot about us and that that action was so disrespectful regardless of any rush that the bike rider may have been in.

Just in case you are not sure what MA meant when mentioning a countdown crossing we have found a video of one in action.
