Clear your mind – think about nothing for a while

06 Jun 2018

Dear LPG,

Did you know that, according to the internet, the average person has about 50,000 different thoughts a day?  I don’t know about most readers but that fact got me adding yet another thought to my tally, and that is that by the time we get to our age we have done an awful lot of thinking.

I am not sure about anyone else but I worry about some of the very negative thoughts that I have and my inability to do much about them.  Let’s face it, before you can work out that you have had a horrid thought about someone or something you have to have already had it.

When I was a lot younger I got into martial arts and as part of the discipline we would start and finish each session with a short period of meditation where we were instructed that we should concentrate on thinking about nothing.   I used to find that difficult then and I remember that thoughts about what I was going to give the children for dinner and if I had enough time to buy what I needed between leaving the class and picking them up from school had a habit of creeping into my meditation regularly.

But now that I have got to a stage in life when I don’t have so many such pressing thoughts I  have decided to try again.  Perhaps it is a good idea to give our minds a rest every now and then although the secret of how has to be practiced.

Well at least the subject has given us something else to think about.
