This is Lewisham too!

16 May 2018

Dear LPG,

I read an article in Time Out magazine last year, that named Lewisham as one of the UK’s most miserable places to live in, but when it comes to world ratings I think we rank a bit higher.

I don’t think that they had the time to spare a thought for Lewisham Ontario Canada.  Did you know that that Lewisham is now considered a Ghost Town?  From what I can gather it was one of a few areas that settlers tried to make their home in the 1870’s.  They appeared to have been promised a lot, but found things quite different when they finally got there.

Notably, John G Taylor, who had travelled from our Lewisham, was one of its original most influential residents.  He was responsible for building at least one of the schools, their version of the Lewisham post office and for the naming of the area.  Sadly though, by 1940 the small community had worked out that it was a lot colder and more remote a place than they could cope with.

So it is now an area where holidaymakers go to hunt and explore apparently, and the only structure that is left now is one of the school buildings, which is used as a lodge. I am hoping that LPG will be able to find the information that I did so that interested readers can take the time to look at a few pictures of Lewisham in Ontario Canada …

They say our Lewisham is a miserable place but at least we have lasted for more than 80 years.
