Two-way charity.

17 Apr 2018

Dear LPG,

I wanted to comment on our freedom to give to charity and what happens to what we give.

I agree with OY of Catford whose comment was posted on March 31st and which was called ‘A good deed on the day…’.  Concern was focussed on how much of the charity money that we donate is actually spent on the charitable aim of the organisation who collects it.   But there is something that we can do.

Over recent years more and more organisations are leaving bags with the aim to collect our old clothes.  This often happens with short notice but the biggest advantage is that there is not a lot else that any organisation can do with clothes, but give them to the people there were promised to.  After all, clothes are not likely to be accepted as a payment to settle a wage or advertising bill.

I think it is really hard to give away some of my outfits even though I am never going to wear them again. They are often too small, out of fashion or liable to make me look like ‘mutton dressed up as lamb’, but they often remind me of an event I attended, or I can remember somewhere of significance that I wore particular items to.   It is comforting to know that they will be worn again and there is the advantage that clothes are picked up because they can be quite heavy, and getting them to a charity shop can be hard work if all you have is a shopping trolley to transport them with.

There is always a drawback, and the one here is that the bags that are left often invite you to leave your items outside your home on a particular day, which means getting up and ready to face what is beyond your front door a lot earlier in the morning than usual, so that they are not subject to overnight rain or bad weather.

So the clothes can’t be used in any other way and you can be sure that they are getting to the people you intended them for… another good deed on the day perhaps?

LPG took on board PR’s comments and can inform that there are organisations that one can contact when one’s clothes are ready.  We have added some contact information below.
