One special tree – the history.

15 Jan 2018

Dear LPG,

I was browsing online the other day and I found this information (►►►) and wanted to share it with the LPG.  There is much local history and I found it interesting to find out about the entire speculation surrounding the way one little bit of Lewisham got its name.

I have moved away from the borough now, but remember my childhood here.  I lived in Devonshire Road for a lot of it and attended Stillness infants and junior school.

Finding the information about One Tree Hill got me doing a bit more browsing and, to my surprize, I found that not only does the school still exist, but they have a website these days (►►►).  I spent many a school day evening walking from Stillness Road, through Honor Oak Park, via the sweet shop, then past Wiley Street, Lessing Street, and Ballina Street, Grierson Road and Honor Oak Park train station.  Then my friends and I would turn left into Devonshire road, but as we did, we would look up the road and see One Tree Hill.  I used to attend St. Augustin’s church, which is in the middle of the park, but there were so many trees there that I really did not know which tree was the one that gave the place its name.

I have always had one unanswered question… and now I know what to look for when I get around to revisiting.  I just thought I would share that memory with you.

OV, Croydon.

As ever LPG found a little information on the area….
