Your mouth doesn’t lie

15 Feb 2018

It is usually said that eyes are open windows to the soul, but did you know that the mouth is a window to one’s overall health? It has been proven that there are some diseases that have oral symptoms so, with examination of teeth, gums, and tongue, it is possible to identify heart or liver diseases, eating disorders, anaemia, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, and many more health issues.

Furthermore, not only does the mouth tell us about the state of the rest of our body, but oral health can have an effect on overall health. For example, some studies have found a relationship between gum disease and heart disease and, under certain circumstances, a tooth infection can cause infections of the heart’s inner lining or the heart valves.

That is why oral health has to become a priority and, let’s be honest, there is still a long way to go. If you have arthritis, maybe tooth brushing is painful or you can’t stand at the sink very long. However, you need to find a way to keep your mouth healthy. A dentist can prescribe special toothpastes to combat dental diseases and give you some tips.

In general, this is something you need to keep in mind. Many people are used to brushing their teeth just in the morning and at night, but it is best to wash your mouth after every meal. It is also crucial to visit your dentist on a regular basis to identify possible problems and get the right treatment in case you have oral health issues that need to be dealt with. Remember that being healthy means having a healthy body from head to toe.
