The basics of computers

10 Dec 2017

Computers have changed our world and they play a crucial role in modern society. The problem is that many of us are missing out and it is a pity. Computers offer great opportunities and refusing to learn about what technology can provide us stops us from enjoying its benefits. Below is a list of the most basic yet useful things that everybody should be able to do with a computer.

Internet browsers. An Internet browser is an open door to a vast amount of knowledge. Not everything is online, but many things are and, what is more, they are just a few clicks away.

Email. Traditional mail has lost part of its importance to email. Even though it doesn’t seem that the first one is going to disappear, emails are getting more and more used as they are faster than letters. Receiving and sending letters to friends and relatives is lovely, but an email reaches the receiver’s virtual mailbox straight after the sender presses “Send”. Your email address can also be used to receive a variety of documents such as bank notifications or bills and you can virtually store them very easily.

Office software. It is one of the most popular computers applications. It consists of a set of programmes that can be used to perform office tasks: writing documents, creating spread sheets and databases or composing presentations. For example, you can use a word processor to write documents (such as claim documents) or you can create a spreadsheet to control your expenses.

Online shopping and banking. Thanks to the Internet, now we can find all kinds of goods and products online that can be purchased and delivered to our homes. Banks are also making the most of the Internet and many services are now offered online (so going to the bank office is not necessary). Bear in mind that you will need antivirus and firewall software if you are going to shop online or use the Internet banking.

Don’t you know how to start? Several companies and organisations offer IT courses for the elderly. Just get in touch with your local one and start enjoying the benefits of new technologies.

LPG may be able to help or put you in touch with a mentor. If you are computer literate why not volunteer to help a neighbour.
