Where do people live the longest?

27 Nov 2017

People tend to think that life expectancy is mainly determined through genes, but that is not true. Did you know that lifestyle is the most important factor in determining not only how long we live, but also the quality of our life? It seems that people from Okinawa, a small island in Japan, have found out the secret to living longer and healthier. It is estimated that 740 out of a population of 1.3 million are centenarians. Okinawan seniors not only have the highest life expectancy in the world, but also the highest health expectancy. How do they do it?

First of all, Okinawans exercise both physically and mentally. This is very important, as quality of life and life expectancy don’t depend just on physical health but also on mental health. Diet is very important too, and theirs is low in salt, high in fruits and vegetables, and contain plenty of fibre and antioxidants. They don’t overeat either. They don’t eat so that they are stuffed, but just modestly sated, and that involves a lower calorific intake. As their diet is also high in vitamin E, they don’t suffer from dementia or senility as often.

Finally, Okinawans are very much respected. They are considered to be crucial members of communities due to their life experiences. Feeling valued is vital in order to be happy, and happiness is a key aspect of healthy living. So it starts with us. Of course, we can take on a healthier lifestyle, but another thing we can do is becoming aware of our enormous value. Only if we are proud of our condition, the rest of society will see how much we have to offer.
