Staying cool

01 Sep 2017

Hello LPG,

I have to say that I am as guilty as everyone else on this island of ours.  Over the past week, I have been guilty of uttering those words that we should avoid for fear of tempting fate.  Have you found yourself walking wearily down a Lewisham street, meeting a friend or acquaintance and for want of something else to say, greeting them with, “Hello, don’t you think it’s just too hot at the moment?”

I have a tip for anyone who is really having trouble sleeping because it is just too hot.  I am one of those Lewisham pensioners who holiday in my childhood home country which just happens to be Jamaica, and I suppose that living in England for so long has forced Jamaica to give me that, “it’s just too hot’  feeling.  The truth is that I am just not able to take the heat at night any more. So when I visit I put my folded sheet and pillow case in the freezer for about fifteen minutes while I take my evening shower, and getting into bed becomes are really cool and relaxing experience.

I am not sure if it is for everyone, but it keeps me really cool, and I just want to share the idea with any of my fellow LPG web visitors who could find it helpful.

I often think that the bouts of English heatwave that we experience during the summer are equally as hard for us elders to endure as the cold, white, frosty, snowy winters that sometimes come our way, at which point I can foresee myself walking down that same street and greeting a friend with the words, “Hello, don’t you think it’s just too cold at the moment?”

It is true, we are never satisfied!

An LPG comment

LPG feel it important to air all views and experiences that a offered by our web contributors.  But we would remind them who have read this article that they may like to check with a GP before trying this if they are not in completely rude health.

Though we could not find any information on actually freezing bedclothes, we did find some evidence to back up the notion that a relatively sudden lowering of body temperature could help with more successful sleeping at any time, let alone in the extraordinarily hot weather we are presently experiencing.  (►►►) ;  for us oldies perhaps a cooler shower would be sufficient!
