Online donations are great, but you have to be careful

26 Oct 2017

The Internet has become an important tool for charities and other organisations to spread their message and get funding and new members. Websites and social networks allow them to provide information about what they stand for and what they do to make our world a better place. All these organisations have their own Internet channels, which is good both for the organisations and the citizens, as it makes it easier to get involved.

Older people often support social causes and organisations. There are websites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, And GoFundMe that provide Crowd-funding spaces to get funds for new products but also for a wide range of worthy causes and organisations. These websites bring together a huge number of projects, so first of all, before providing your financial support, read about the project itself but also who is behind it, as you surely don’t want to donate your money to a group that doesn’t really support the same causes that you do.

You should also be careful with charity scams. Most charities have the option to donate online on their websites. That is ok as long as you know that it is a legitimate charity. However, some unscrupulous people take advantage of people of good will, and create fake donation causes just to rip others off. So again, before donating, do some research in order to find out whether your money is going to be spent on what it is supposed to be spent.

Being willing to help is great and thanks to the Internet it is easier than ever before. However, you always have to get properly informed before donating. And of course, if you suspect that someone is trying to rip you off, report it to the police.
