Versed thoughts (chapter 80): The Clown of Happy Gully

01 Aug 2025

Dear LPG readers,

Being an occasional clown is perhaps a vocation that we all should try our best to treat as a part-time job. It is hard enough to always be upbeat, but trying from time to time can help spread a little joy and laughter in a world that often feels heavy.

I suspect that the UK reflects a similar level of positivity as many other parts of the world, where people face daily stresses. Clowns bring a burst of positivity, reminding us to smile at life's absurdities. Sadly, their colourful costumes and make-up can evoke a fear called Coulrophobia in some. I hope their silly jokes and playful antics continue to create light-hearted moments and allow shared laughter for as many people as possible.

Ours is most likely not to have a painted face, but I believe we all have a clown hidden inside us waiting to make someone smile now and then, and I hope that the poem I offer today reflects the positives to be had from manifesting them from time to time…

THE CLOWN OF HAPPY GULLY

My heart is filled with gladness,
I have no time for slackness.
I have said farewell to sadness,
Some folks say this is madness.

I have no pain or sorrow,
No fears about tomorrow;
I have no time to wallow,
I have a path to follow.

I do not need your pity,
I’m just trying to be witty.
So here is the nitty gritty,
I’m the Clown of this great City.

They call me ‘Happy go lucky’,
And laugh at my strange brolly;
But they all come out to see me,
Because I’m so jolly.

I have a Wife named Molly,
And my Daughter’s name is Sally;
I behave just like a Wally,
Because I’m the Clown of Happy Gully.
