The Magic of YouTube in everyday life… Keeping the grandchildren occupied…

16 Apr 2025

Dear LPG readers,

I have mentioned my early morning habit of finding odd things online to pass the time between when I wake up and when I get up nearly every morning.  Some might say that I have nothing better to do with my life and that might well be the case but now that I can share my findings, no matter how odd, I don’t feel it quite such useless occupation.

I suppose that this might be taken as a sweeping statement but, being one myself, I have come to the conclusion that we men seem to run out of things to do before the ladies and a large proportion of the ones I know often observe that I am not ever as busy as my female counterparts.    You might say that I take life easier these days.  I have few time constraints apart from the odd health appointment although I do pick up my grandchildren from school twice a week during school term time.

Sometimes we go to McDonalds but that can get a bit expensive so, when the weather rules out an ‘on-the-way-home’ stop in the park and after one of my expert culinary attempts to satisfy their hunger pangs, keeping them entertained can be a bit of a challenge. There never seems to be any actual homework for the primary school kids these days…  what next.

I have one of those daughters in law who has decided on limited online and screen time and I am always looking for a way to sustain their interest for that last half our (or hour, depending if Mum missies the early train or not).

But back to my latest early morning discovery and what it has to do with the grandchildren.  Magic is the answer when you want to baffle them and impress them with a new skill, and You Tube is the place to learn a few secrets.   Watching someone else show you exactly what to do makes buying an experts book or one of those kits redundant.

So Grandads, why not take a look at the links I have left you below and impress the little ones while you still can!

NF shares some teach yourself magic but suggests that the ones highlighting fire and pain be avoided for the young ones…
